This has to be one of my favourite cards I have made this year. I love bright colours on a white background and I really love the cute space stamp sets that all the companies seem to be coming out with recently. This card features the new MFT Space Explorer set with a sentiment from the Out of this World set from Lawn Fawn. I have to give credit where it is due by stating that this birthday card is inspired by Ashley Marcu (see her design team blog post here). I loved how she had the spaceman rocketing up into space and had to try my own version of this.
I started out by masking a slice out with some post-it tape on some smooth white card stock. I blended Squeezed Lemonade with some Wild Honey Distress Inks to make the rocket blast. I then switched the masking so I could ink up the rest of the night sky using Peacock Feathers, Salty Ocean and Seedless Preserves. I used my Kuretaki Gansai Tambi watercolours (white, black and silver) to add some splatter to the background for a starry effect. Using an MFT die, I cut out a circle for the focal point background.
On some Neenah Solar White cardstock I stamped out the astronaut and three of the planets. I coloured them in with my Copic markers using some reds, blues, greens and cool greys. I added some pale yellow to the reflective parts of his suit to tie in the yellow of his rocket blast. I had originally intended to use the coordinating dies but felt that the white border would detract from the scene I had created in the background, so I fussy cut out the pieces and went around the edges with a black Memento marker. I added a layer of Spectrum Noir Sparkle to the pieces before adding some Glossy Accents to the astronaut’s visor and control panel.
On the front panel of the A2 smooth white card base I white heat embossed some stars to give some subtle interest to the background. From the same card, I white heat embossed the sentiment and ink blended some Peacock Feathers and Salty Ocean Distress Inks for a matching birthday sentiment banner. I cut the ends on one side to make a banner and trimmed it to the width of my card.
To assemble, I used my tape runner to adhere the background sky to the base before using some foam tape to pop up the astronaut, planets and sentiment.
It’s been a while since I was able to bring out my Copics to experiment but I think I need to do it more often! I really like the reflection effect and it warms up the scene nicely. I am sure this template will be used to create many more birthday cards in the future!
