It is my Dad’s birthday today and I made this wonderful space birthday card for him. When I was about 8 years old I learnt a little song in school and I came across it again a couple of months ago. I think the real words are ‘My friend’s orange with a big bald head’, but of course I had to change to ‘My Dad’s orange with a big bald head’. It gave me a chance to bring out the numerous space themed sets I have from Gerda Steiner and Clearly Besotted, and make use of the wonderful stamps I won from Tara Sell and Christine at Create a Smile. I coloured these with a mixture of Copic markers and Distress Inks. Happy Birthday, Dad!
I started out with the background, using a handful of brightly coloured distress inks on some Tim Holtz water colour cardstock. I then worked in some Black Soot Distress Ink over the top of the colours and sprinkled some water over the top to get that distress look. I used the white and gold from the Kuretaki Gansai Tambi watercolours to add some splatters to get that star galaxy effect. When it was dry, I heat embossed some gold stars on the background. I trimmed it down to just under A2 card size and mounted it on an A2 sized side folding base of Neenah Desert Storm.
I stamped the three alien guys from the Gerda Steiner designs stamp sets with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and coloured them with my Copic markers. I chose bright colours and used at least three colours in each group to get a good contrasting blend. I fussy cut them out and went around the edges with a black marker to hide my cutting imperfections. I stamped the ground from the Clearly Besotted Out of this Word set on some Neenah Desert Storm and added some shading with some warm grey Copics. I trimmed this out and mounted it on the card panel with some foam tape, along with the aliens, for a bit of dimension.
The sentiment comes from the Gerda Steiner Moody Unicorns Set, which I white heat embossed on some black card stock. I cut this out using a Lawn Fawn banner die and foam mounted it over the ground below the aliens. Some Glossy Accents, Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen, white gel pen and clear sequins finished off the front of the card.
I had to include the song inside the card, decorated with some stamps from the sets and the remaining alien I coloured. I covered the eyeballs, alien and speech bubble with Glossy Accents, though in future I will have to make sure that the Glossy Accents pieces don’t fall in the same place. Even though I left it overnight to dry, the tail fell inline with one of the eyeballs and I ended up ripping the card slightly opening it later.
Thanks for reading and happy crafting!
