This set of Birthday Hugs cards was inspired by a set Tara Sell made (see her blog post and video) and the colouring genious of Laura Bassen (see her blog post and video). I love the Neat & Tangled stamp sets and I had a lot of fund combining the Better Together set with a few Avery Elle products to create this set of three colourful cards. The characters are coloured with Copic markers and the background is a custom water coloured background. I made an extra background in pink but haven’t yet worked out exactly how I’m going to use it, given that pink is not really my colour!
I started out with four pieces of Tim Holtz watercolour cardstock, washing the background with some clean water and then dropping on one of the four colours from the Kuretaki Gansai Tambi watercolours: pink, green, purple and blue. I built up the layers, drying them in between with a heat tool to retain the colour. After leaving to dry completely, I splattered on some clean water with my Ranger Mister and then picked up some of the colour with a kitchen towel. I also splattered on some more of the colour I used in the background, along with some white and silver. I left this to dry and cut it out with the smaller of the Wonky Stitches dies from Avery Elle. I cut a coordinating black panel using the larger Wonky Stitches die and mounted them onto an A2 top folding card base in Neenah Desert Storm.
I stamped out the three characters from the set using MFT Hybrid ink on some Neenah Solar White cardstock and coloured them with Copic markers (colours listed below). I chose coordinating colours in brighter hues to match the background.
After cutting these out with the coordinating dies, I also cut two sets of black and white banners from the Neat and Tangled Scalloped dies and white heat embossed two birthday and one general hugs sentiments. For two of the cards I clear heat embossed some Versafine Onyx Black ink on the background using sentiments from the Avery Elle Skating By and Neat and Tangled Better Together. I adhered the banners directly onto the panel using some Ranger Multi Medium Matte and popped up the characters with a bit of Foam Tape to give some dimension.
For the purple card, I coloured a heart from the set and adhered it to a scrap of the banner I had previously cut off before covering it with some Glossy Accents. I added some clear sequins to the background of all the cards along with some Spectrum Noir clear sparkle over parts of the characters.
I like them all but I think the purple one is my favourite because of the cute little owl. Definitely think I will make more with this set!
Thanks for reading and happy crafting!
